Mumbai: In The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan’s character was based largely on South siren Silk Smita. The actress has now signed two biopics, one on the life of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the other, based on the ‘human calculator’ Shakuntala Devi. Over the years, the Tumhari Sulu actress has carved a niche for herself by associating with projects that stand out in the crowd.
Her last release, Mission Mangal, saw her playing a scientist who was part of ISRO’s mission to Mars. The character she played in it was based on the film’s director Jagan Shakti’s sister who works at ISRO.
Recently, Vidya spoke about playing parts based on people around us. She opined that it is never easy to make a biopic, especially on someone who has been a public figure. The actress admitted that she has been offered several biopics over the years, but wasn’t tempted to take on most roles. The story that the maker chooses to tell is very crucial. And only if that happens organically, does the project become exciting for Vidya.
Talking about essaying the role of the mathematical genius, the actress said that she is thrilled to take on the part. The Bollywood actress feels that people have a certain perception of mathematicians. Shakuntala Devi was not only a genius but also a lot of fun. Vidya further revealed that she got to know that the mathematician had a great sense of humour, and so she identified with her.
