Mumbai: Raj Mehta’s debut directorial Good Newwz indeed comes as one. The film, co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani in key roles, is everything it promised to be – entertaining and enthralling. The film is a story of two families, both by the surname Batra, who end up intertwined after their sperm samples get mixed up in their respective in-vitro fertilisation process. The film’s premise in itself is a heavy subject to deal with, but the makers, almost deliberately it seems, have kept the tone of the film on the lighter note.
Deepti and Varun Batra, a Mumbai-based couple, have been married for seven years. The couple is keen on having a baby, but all efforts in vain. Deepti, an entertainment journalist, wants to be a mother and add to it, the pressure building upon her by their relatives. As for Varun, who is a successful salesman at a car showroom, he seems to be in a mixed mind and not completely ready for a baby. More so, he is tired by the efforts being asked to put in. Upon recommendation by his sister, Varun and Deepti decide to visit an IVF clinic.
The couple agrees on the procedure and everything goes well until Honey and Monica Batra arrive in the scene. If Deepti and Varun are on the sophisticated end of a rope, Honey and Monica are on the opposite end of the same rope. Hailing from Chandigarh, Honey and Monica are a happy-go-lucky couple, who are introduced to the viewers when the doctors, Mr. and Mrs. Bakshi (ably played by Adil Hussain and Tisca Chopra), confess that the sperm samples have been mixed.
What follows is how both the Batra couples come to terms with what has happened, how they deal with it and how they arrive at a decision as to what to do with the babies who are on their way.
The film delivers what it promised – an entertaining ride. From the word go, the makers have ensured to tackle the issue at hand lightly. With moments full of giggle, laughter and everything thing in between, the film is a smooth ride for more part and it keeps the viewers enthralled.
Kareena and Akshay as a sophisticated urban couple hit the right spot. Their fights are relatable, their moments of love seem genuine and their problems, too, natural. Diljit and Kiara as the ever-smiling flamboyant couple make for a delight on screen. Individually too, the actors deliver to the hilt.
But amidst the four actors, it’s Kareena and Diljit who most certainly steal the show. Kareena is a natural at this role, and so is Diljeet. If the way Kareena is portraying her character seems effortless, there’s not a single Diljit moment that is not funny. And it somewhere reflects that both are in their respective safe zones portraying the said characters.
The film has many moments that have either smartly taken digs at Bollywood celebrities or smoothly paved way for Bollywood references. For instances, when the couples are stressing over the sperm mix-up, one of them says, “Gaane hai jo mix kar dia”. Or another one when Akshay is debating over whether they are having kids because they want it or because of the societal pressure, he brings up a mention of the media attention on celebrity kids. Kareena, who is playing a media professional who covers the entertainment beat, talks about Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt’s interviews as for Akshay, he hilariously mentions his own film Kesari in one of the scenes.
The film, however, running at 134 minutes, feels a bit stretched. The second half could have been crisper.
The makers have made clear distinctions – be it the dressing style of both the couples, the talking style and at a few points, it does feel a bit stereotypical. For instance, Honey and Monica are almost always wearing bling or bright shades, happen to be loud on most occasions, while Deepti and Varun are shown in high-end brands, and are anything but loud. The film has also been done in a way that it spoonfeeds everything that is required to understand the story and that can go either way, depending on how you like your films.
In a nutshell, Good Newwz is a good film to end the year with. If you want to watch something that’s light and entertaining, Good Newwz might just be it.
