Zaira Wasim reacts to locust attack tweet controversy

Mumbai: Former actress Zaira Wasim, known for her spectacular work in films like Dangal and The Sky Is Pink, has been in the news for her viral tweet on locusts attack. She got brutally trolled on social media and netizens accused her of using a verse from the Quran for justifying that the locust attack is the result of sins done by mankind.

The former actress has reacted to the controversy around her posts on locust attacks and said that her “tweet was completely taken out of context”.

Zaira Wasim reacted to Canadian journalist Tarek Fatah’s tweet which read, “Indian Muslim actress @ZairaWasimmm mocks her own countrymen as being victims of Allah’s wrath. This is how she explains the locust swarm.”

The former actress said, “Asalamualaykum Uncle Fateh. While I too agree making claims like `this is wrath or a curse’ when the world is going through so much is a really insensitive one, I wish to also emphasise that making a claim on our own as big as It’s a wrath or curse of Allah upon any land* is a statement one is making on behalf of Allah, which is actually a religiously irresponsible one and a sin and also a claim I never made, let alone mock anyone.”

She added, “For the knowledge of the actual reality of a calamity that befalls anyone, whether it’s a test, punishment or a blessing only lies with Allah, The Sovereign, and we cannot and must not make such claims on our own.”

She added that any Ayah (verse) from the Quran cannot be interpreted in isolation and it should be understood in the context of when, why and to whom it was revealed.

Saying that her tweet was blown out of proportion, she wrote, “My tweet was completely taken out of context and blown out of proportion and none of the opinion, whether good or bad, define the reality of my intentions, for that is between me and My Rabb, and something which I’m not even going to explain, for I’m only accountable to Allah and not His creation.”

She added, “The world is going through a tough time and a lot of hatred and bigotry already, the least we could do is not add more to it.”

Zaira ended her tweet by responding to Fatah calling her Indian actress. She wrote, “PS I am not an actress anymore.”

On Thursday, Zaira shared a verse from the Quran referring to the locust attacks and related it to man’s arrogance.

Recently, several cases of locust attacks in Indian states of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra were reported. In the worst such attack in 26 years, the swarms of locusts are destroying crops in huge amount. Zaira’s tweet, in these times, didn’t go down well with the Twitterati with many calling the former actress’s post insensitive. After receiving negative response on her post she deleted her accounts for a few days.

Zaira Wssim was last seen in Shonali Bose’s The Sky Is pink. The film also starred Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar.

In 2019, before the release of the film, Zaira announced on social media that she is quitting the Hindi film industry and acting as it interfered with her faith.
