Mumbai: An India-Pakistan clash is always highly awaited. It was another high-voltage encounter when the arch-rivals locked horns in the 2004 Champions Trophy when Sourav Ganguly-led Men in Blue were in a must-win scenario in order to advance to the semi-finals. Carrying an unbeaten run in ICC events, till then, India had all to play for defending a modest 201 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Dinesh Karthik, the then 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman who was just two ODIs old, was a substitute during the marquee clash. However, he made an impact despite being on the sidelines. Nonetheless, it wasn’t something he cherished but certainly remembered for a long time as he had irked Ganguly with his actions.
Karthik, who was carrying a lot of bottles, ran towards the team huddle during the drinks breaks. However, the manner in which he sprinted was so quick that he couldn’t avoid himself from colliding with Ganguly.
The veteran batsman shared the incident during a talk show in 2018 and stated, “I was a substitute in that game and I had to carry drinks to the players. I was running towards the players to give them drinks and accidentally, I slipped and fell on Dada. He got frustrated and yelled, “Where do you get these players from, who is he?.”
Nonetheless, there is a new twist to the story. Recently, Yuvraj Singh shared the exact words spoken from Ganguly, who was miffed with Karthik.
Talking about the match, Pakistan had won the toss and invited India to bat first. Apart from Rahul Dravid (67) and Ajit Agarkar (47), none of the batters stood firm as India managed a modest 200 all-out in 49.5 overs. In reply, Irfan Pathan returned with 3 for 34 and the other bowlers also kept it tight from their ends, but Mohammad Yousuf took his side past the finish line by virtue of three wickets.
